Apparently I've done something wrong or something is buggy.
I did emerge system today and everything was fine until reboot :)
I know that it changed /etc/fstab so I corrected it to the previous one but
after reboot i get this:
*Mounting /proc... [OK]
rm: cannot remove '/dev/.devfsd': Operation not permitted
*Activating swap.....
*Remounting root filesystem read-only (if neccessary)... [!!]
*Checking root filesystem .....
fsck 1.32 (09-Nov-2002)
fsck.ext3: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/hda2
/dev/hda2:
The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2
filesystem.............and so on
....sugesting to use e2fsck -b 8139 or something but I'm afraid to spoil my
data
The disk is ok , I even reverted hda2 to ext2 and changed it in fstab but
didn't help. what can I do? where is the error? I can access /dev/hda2 if i
boot from livecd and there aren't any problems there.
help :)

You didn't do anything wrong, it was just bad timing.

1. Boot from the LiveCD again.
2. Mount your root partition to /mnt/gentoo
3. chroot into /mnt/gentoo
4. Run 'emerge sync'
5. Downgrade Gawk from 3.1.2-r1 to 3.1.1-r2
6. Reemerge baselayout
7. Exit, unmount, and reboot.

I did something similiar [after a ircchat #gentoo] but AFAIR I did downgrade
baselayout first and then etc-update and then downgraded gawk - all without
"#emerge rsync". it work a bit i.e. even though with errors but i was able
to boot and startx etc though with with uid=0 (?) and as I was told it was
then when I upgraded again only the baselayout. after reboot trouble began
again i.e. first it claimed to wanted to get /var/lib... before mounting
it - in fact it didn't mount anuthing except /. so i mounted everything
manually and then changed some file to point to /mnt/.initd instead of
/var/lib/init this helped a bit but still have to mount everything manually
but it cannot mount / in RW mode :( so even by mounting /tmp to enother
partition i cannot startx though it tries and i even see the nvidia logo
etc.
I am trying to rsync since over 24 hrs but it's very difficult - i tried
webrsync and it finished within 5 minutes but thaen it said it is of date
24.03.2003 so older than the one i had. :(
any help? i compiled most packages with -b so maybe it will be easier to
setup from start? if so, what with the kernel? can i copy the /lib and
/usr/src/linux and /boot or it is better to compile it again?
